Editorial Standards

Ennui Nation® exists to follow power to where it actually sits — across Britain and the wider world — and publish what the evidence shows. The work is organised into four collections: Britain in the Margins (the UK), Foreign Ground (the wider world), The Standing Record (investigations) and Britain Reimagined (policy and ideas). These are the editorial commitments we hold ourselves to.

Editorial commitments

Accuracy. Every factual claim I publish is supported by evidence I can name and, where appropriate, show. Where I cannot name a source, I describe the basis for the claim as clearly as possible. I do not publish claims I cannot defend.

Sourcing and verification. I verify claims against primary sources — public records, court documents, official statistics, first-hand testimony, on-the-record interviews, technical evidence — before I publish. Secondary sources are treated as leads, not as verification.

Calibration. I state uncertainty honestly. Where evidence is strong, I say so. Where it is partial or contested, I say so. I do not inflate single incidents into systemic claims, and I do not collapse systemic claims into single anecdotes.

Mechanism over spectacle. I prefer to explain how something works — how a policy, decision, system or institution actually operates — rather than stage it as personal theatre.

Dignity and harm minimisation. I write about real people. I take care with survivors of harm, witnesses under pressure, whistleblowers and vulnerable interviewees. Informed consent is the default. I do not exploit identifiable distress for readership.

Proportion. I cover what is important, not only what is easy to produce. I resist manufactured alarm, conspiracist framing and false-balance treatment of questions where the evidence clearly favours one side.

Independence. We do not accept advertising with editorial influence. We do not take corporate sponsorship of coverage. We do not apply for grants that come with editorial conditions. Our income is from reader subscriptions and donations only. Our full accounts are public through Companies House.

Transparency about AI. I use AI tools to assist with research, structuring, drafting support and quality review. A human editor (currently me) authorises every publication. AI does not approve facts, verify sources, or make publishing decisions on my behalf.

Legal compliance. I publish within the laws that govern UK journalism — defamation, privacy, contempt of court, data protection, election law, source protection, harassment law — and the public-interest defences and exemptions that exist for journalism.

Corrections, complaints and right of reply

If I get something wrong, I correct it promptly and visibly. If you want to complain about something I have published, or you were approached (or believe you should have been) before a piece named you, the pages below explain the exact process. These three aren't separate footer links — this page is the way in to all of them.
