Ennui Nation® exists to follow power to where it actually sits — in the small print, the spending, and the decisions made somewhere far from the people who feel them. We publish long-form reporting, explainers and investigations that name who decided, who benefited, and who paid.

Why we exist

This didn't start as a business plan. Ali grew up around a broken foster care system, then lived with unemployment, poverty, discrimination and periods of homelessness — and watched, over and over, decisions made somewhere else get blamed on the people they landed on. Austerity was sold as inevitable while the cost landed on the people least able to absorb it.

Ennui Nation exists because the alternative on offer — shallow outrage, party-line commentary, fact-free "both sides" theatre — wasn't good enough. Somebody had to actually do the work instead of just complaining about it. That's not a backstory we're using to sound authentic. It's the reason the evidence standard on this site is as strict as it is: it was built by someone who knows exactly what it costs when nobody bothers to check.

What we publish

Four collections. Each with one job.

• Britain in the Margins — Britain as it actually runs, not as it's described in a press release: the institutions, the policy, the machinery behind the headline.
• Foreign Ground — the wider world, held to the same rule: nothing printed we can't back up.
• The Standing Record — the stories that take months, not days. Pattern-led, source-heavy, built to survive a hard read.
• Britain Reimagined — not just what's broken. What would actually fix it, and what it would cost.

What makes this different

Plenty of outlets will explain how something works. A handful will investigate when something's being hidden. A few will suggest how to fix it. Almost nobody does all three in the same place, on the same evidence. Ennui Nation does. If we're proposing a fix, it's because we investigated first — and if we investigated, it's because the evidence held up. Nothing here is guesswork dressed up as a plan.

How we work

• Evidence, not opinion. Every claim has a source we can name or describe. No source, no sentence.
• Calibration. We won't call one bad decision a conspiracy, and we won't call a pattern a coincidence.
• Plain English. No jargon, no false balance, no hedging that protects us instead of informing you.
• Accountability. Get something wrong, and we say so — fast, in the open, and without burying it.
• Sources you can use. Every piece publishes with the sources behind it — so if you need to point someone to where a claim comes from, you can.

Nobody buys a better sentence about themselves here — not for £2, not for £2 million.

Who's behind it

Right now, Ennui Nation is one person: Ali — writing, research, fact-checking, editing and publishing, all of it. That's not a disclaimer. It means no committee waters anything down, and nothing sits in a queue while a hierarchy decides whether to run it. As the team grows, everyone doing the work will be named here, exactly as Ali is now.

We use AI tools to help with research, structuring and drafting. They don't verify facts, they don't touch sensitive material, and they don't get a byline — every editorial decision and every publication is made and authorised by a human.
