Foreign Ground

Foreign Ground is Ennui Nation®’s international collection. It covers the world beyond the UK: political systems, economies, conflicts, institutions, trade, climate, migration. It works slowly and carefully, with evidence. The global information environment runs on speed, outrage and simplification. This does not.

What it is

Foreign Ground exists to slow the reader down. Its job is to explain how the world works: the institutions, systems, incentives and constraints that shape outcomes across borders.

It is explanatory, not reactive. It goes for depth where the news cycle goes for speed, and it explains how something works rather than staging the drama around it.

Foreign Ground does not aim to tell the reader what the world means. It aims to show how the world works.

Regions, religions, ethnicities and cultures are treated as internally varied, never as single blocks. There is no ‘Asia’ that thinks one thing, no ‘Africa’ that acts one way.

How I work

Every commitment below is kept by one named, accountable person. See Who’s behind it on the About page.

Evidence before assertion: no claim stands on a single source where corroboration is reasonably available, and high-impact claims need more than one. Uncertainty gets stated, not hidden.

Context before comparison: comparisons between countries or systems are controlled for what actually matters: population, economic capacity, methodology. Where they can’t be controlled for, the comparison doesn’t get made.

Attribution before conclusion: a government statement, a military claim, a factional talking point: all of them are positions, attributed as positions, never recycled as neutral fact.

I write in plain English: no diplomatic euphemism, and none of the civilisational shorthand or national exceptionalism that so much foreign coverage runs on. Institutions are named before individuals. Where a person is named, it is because they hold the power and took the act. Labels like ‘dictator’, ‘fascist’, ‘traitor’ or ‘puppet’ do not appear in my own voice; where they appear at all, they are quoted, attributed and tested against the record.

Where a piece makes a high-risk claim about an identifiable person or organisation, a reasonable right-of-reply attempt is made where practical and safe, and the outcome is published with the piece. Updates and corrections are dated and visible, not quietly edited in.

Articles

The first pieces are on their way. When they land, they appear here.
