This notice explains what cookies Ennui Nation® uses and how you can control them.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device. Cookies can be essential (needed for the site to work) or non-essential (used for analytics, advertising, personalisation, or tracking).

Under UK law — the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and UK GDPR — websites must tell you what cookies they use, and must ask for consent before setting non-essential cookies.

Essential cookies

These cookies are required for the site to work. They are set when you use supporter features.

  • Session cookie — keeps you logged in when you sign into a supporter account.
  • Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) token — security, to protect form submissions.
  • Private-content access — if we publish privately for a defined group, this cookie identifies that access.

These cookies are set by our publishing platform, Ghost. They do not track you across other websites, and they do not contain identifying personal data beyond what is needed to keep your own session working.

Analytics

Our site analytics are cookie-free and first-party. We use the native analytics built into Ghost, which do not set tracking cookies on your device. We see aggregate numbers — how many people read a piece, which country they were in, which device type they used — not individual identity.

Non-essential cookies

Ennui Nation does not currently set any non-essential cookies. If that ever changes — for example, if we add a tool that sets tracking cookies — we will:

  1. Update this notice.
  2. Add a cookie consent banner so you can choose.
  3. Only set non-essential cookies with your consent.

Third-party embeds

If a page on Ennui Nation embeds content from a third party (for example, a video), that third party may set cookies through the embed. Where we use embeds, we will either pick privacy-respecting providers or use "click-to-load" embeds so that no third-party cookie is set unless you ask for it. Where a non-privacy-respecting embed is unavoidable for editorial reasons, we will say so on the page.

How to control cookies

You can control cookies through your browser:

  • Delete existing cookies.
  • Block cookies from specific sites, including ours.
  • Block all third-party cookies.
  • Use private or incognito mode.

If you block our essential cookies, supporter features will not work.

Changes to this notice

We review this notice at least annually, and update it whenever our cookie use materially changes.
