The Standing Record
The Standing Record is Ennui Nation®’s investigative collection. It covers concealed wrongdoing, structural deception, covert influence and public narratives that are materially misleading. These are the stories where ordinary explanatory journalism is not enough. By design, it is slower, stricter and more defensive than any other collection here. That is deliberate.
What it is
The Standing Record exists to investigate and document what power often depends on hiding. It publishes claims only at the level the evidence can defensibly support, and it shows exactly how far that evidence goes, as part of the story.
This collection investigates what power conceals and what the record still allows me to show. Every piece starts from a specific, testable claim, contemporary or historical, and follows the evidence to its limit, no further. The promise is precision, not volume: I say exactly what has been shown, exactly how and exactly how far.
Every piece carries a record behind it: source logs, risk notes, verification steps, right-of-reply logs and any corrections made after publication. The paper trail is part of the work.
Contact in confidence
If you have information about concealed wrongdoing, structural deception or covert influence, read Contact me in confidence first. It explains how to reach me safely and what I can and cannot promise.
How I work
Every commitment below is kept by one named, accountable person. See Who’s behind it on the About page.
Evidence first: a claim rises only as high as the evidence can defensibly carry it, no further.
Uncertainty visible: what’s known, what isn’t and what would change the conclusion: all stated plainly, never buried in the phrasing.
Harm minimised: I publish only what’s necessary to support the claim. Victims, sources and vulnerable people are protected by default, not by exception.
Right of reply treated as accuracy: subjects of serious criticism are notified, given a fair opportunity to respond and represented fairly. A non-response is reported as absence. It is never reported as proof.
Records kept for audit: source logs, risk notes, verification steps, right-of-reply attempts, corrections: all of it recorded and retained, so the paper trail outlasts the news cycle.
Institutions are named before individuals. A person is named only where there is a clear, documented act or omission, using powers they realistically held, that was pivotal to the outcome.
What this collection does not do
- It does not publish rumour, speculation or ‘open secret’ claims as reporting.
- It does not imply guilt through tone, framing or selective omission.
- It does not treat accusation as evidence.
- It does not pursue personal scandal without a public-interest justification.
- It does not identify private individuals beyond what the claim actually requires.
- It does not act as activism, propaganda or partisan combat.
- It does not use language like ‘dictator’, ‘fascist’, ‘traitor’ or ‘puppet’ in its own voice; where those words appear, they are quoted, attributed and tested against the record.
